Labour Party intensifies membership drive, to recruit, train polling agents

The Senator Nenadi Usman-led Labour Party, along with relevant stakeholders including the Political Commission of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), have intensified ongoing efforts to increase the party’s membership.

A top-ranking member of the party’s statutory Board of Trustees, who confided in the Vanguard in Abuja on Thursday, said the party in collaboration with the NLC was “giving life to dormant plans to increase our numerical strength.”

It was gathered that the NLC headquarters has directed state branches and affiliates to increase the sensitisation of members on the need to register and become card-carrying members of the party.

The source said, “Sensitisation is going on at a pace never before seen. Workers are aware of how close we were to getting power at the centre in 2023 and how we lost it.

“Our counterparts in other climes, like Britain, are so organised that the Labour Party is a major player in the politics of Britain. We have realised our mistakes and we are now determined to remedy them before 2027.

“The NLC and all of its affiliates nationwide have resolved to work together to ensure the success of the ongoing membership revalidation and registration exercise.

“We are also committed to reconciling aggrieved party members in the interest of our party and the generality of Nigerians.”

The source also revealed the party’s plans to prevent “the orchestrated plot by institutions of government to frustrate the opposition.”

He said, “First, we will recruit and train committed party faithful to serve as polling agents in all units in wards nationwide.”

Interim National Chairman of the party, Senator Nenadi Usman, had reiterated the party’s resolve to put its acts together ahead of 2027.

She said, “For us in the Labour Party, the lessons from the last presidential election have been instructive. We have come to realise that the foundation of electoral success lies in meticulous grassroots preparation, particularly the deployment of agents.

“That is why we are committing significant resources and energy toward ensuring effective representation across the 176,974 polling units nationwide.

“In the previous presidential election, despite our strong belief in our performance, we faced challenges substantiating certain claims, largely because we lacked comprehensive agent coverage capable of producing duly countersigned copies of Form EC8A from across the federation.”
