Kidney patient seeks N43m for urgent transplant

The family of a young Nigerian man, Mr. Okafor Uchenna, is appealing to the public for financial assistance to help him undergo a life-saving kidney transplant after being diagnosed with kidney failure.
As you read this article, doctors at the Military Hospital, Yaba, and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH Lagos, say that Uchenna, who has been diagnosed with end-stage kidney failure, requires about N18 million for a life-saving procedure and about N25 million for the donor. Sadly, his family cannot afford the cost of the surgery.
According to Uchenna’s brother, Mr Patrick Okafor, his health challenges began on March 18, 2025, when he started experiencing persistent vomiting, weakness, and abdominal pain.
After a series of laboratory tests, doctors diagnosed him with H. Pylori ulcer, and he began treatment.
However, his condition took a drastic turn for the worse on August 22, 2025, when the symptoms intensified.
He began to suffer from sleepless nights, severe weakness, paleness, swollen legs, vomiting, mouth blisters, significant weight loss, and an inability to pass urine. Alarmed by the development, his family rushed him to the hospital. After several tests, doctors confirmed that he was suffering from kidney failure. Since then, Mr. Uchenna has been placed on regular dialysis, a procedure that has kept him alive for the past two months while awaiting a transplant.
“I have been on dialysis and taking medications, but the cost has become overwhelming,” he said. “I am appealing to kind-hearted Nigerians, corporate bodies, and government agencies to please assist me in raising funds for a kidney transplant.”
Okafor appealed to well meaning Nigerians and corporate organisations to support his family in order to give him a chance to live a healthy life again.
