Jigawa sets up committee to register transit herders

The Jigawa State Government has approved the constitution of a high-level committee to develop a framework for the registration of transit herders as part of efforts to promote peaceful coexistence between farmers and pastoralists across the state.

The State Commissioner for Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Hon. Sagir Musa Ahmad, disclosed this while briefing journalists on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting.

He said the initiative reflects the government’s commitment to ensuring the free, orderly and secure movement of livestock while strengthening measures to improve security, livestock management and public health.

According to Ahmad, “The constitution of this committee is aimed at developing a practical framework for the registration of transit herders in order to promote peaceful coexistence between farmers and pastoralists and ensure the orderly movement of livestock across Jigawa State.”

He explained that the committee is expected to establish a comprehensive system for registering herders who pass through Jigawa during seasonal livestock movements, particularly those returning from grazing activities in the Republic of Niger after the rainy season.

“The committee will establish a comprehensive registration system for transit herders, especially those returning from the Republic of Niger after the rainy season. This will enhance security, improve livestock management and support public health measures,” he said.

The commissioner noted that the committee had been mandated to examine the proposed registration process and recommend practical measures that would strengthen harmonious relationships between farming and pastoral communities.

He added that “the committee has been given the responsibility of reviewing the proposed registration process and recommending practical measures that will enhance peaceful and harmonious relationships between farmers and pastoralists.”

According to him, the committee will also develop strategies to improve livestock traceability, promote the production of healthy livestock and support the sustainable development of the livestock sector in Jigawa State.

The committee is chaired by the Secretary to the State Government and includes the Commissioner for Livestock Development, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, the Commissioner for Environment, the Commissioner for Health, the Commissioner for Local Government, and the Special Adviser on Security to the Governor as members. The Permanent Secretary, Special Services, will serve as the committee’s secretary.

Ahmad said the council expressed confidence that the committee’s recommendations would provide a comprehensive framework for the effective management of transhumance, strengthen peace and security in rural communities, safeguard public health and contribute to the continued growth of the livestock economy in the state.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to policies that promote peaceful coexistence and agricultural development.
