International Youth Day: PDP mobilises youths to end voter apathy

ABUJA — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has mobilised its youth structures nationwide ahead of the 2026 International Youth Day, urging greater youth participation in politics as a way of tackling voter apathy and strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

With the celebration holding on Wednesday, August 12, the party has directed its state youth leaders to organise activities in their respective states around the theme: ‘How Youth Political Participation Will Curb Voter Apathy in Nigeria.’

The PDP National Youth Leader, Amb. Ibrahim Bala-Aboki, said the focus was to deepen youth engagement in Nigeria’s democratic process, particularly at a time when voter apathy remains a challenge to effective participation.

“The theme underscores the urgent need to deepen youth engagement in Nigeria’s democratic processes, particularly at a time when voter apathy remains a significant challenge to effective democratic participation,” Bala-Aboki said.

He said the programme would also provide an opportunity to discuss the role of young Nigerians in the country’s political process.

Bala-Aboki said the initiative was in line with the PDP’s emphasis on youth inclusion under its National Chairman, Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed Takushara.

The national youth leader said the party leadership had continued to stress the importance of giving young Nigerians and PDP youths a stake in the affairs of the party.

The state-level activities are expected to form part of the nationwide commemoration as the PDP seeks to draw attention to youth participation in democratic governance and national development.

“PDP structures across the country are expected to come alive with youth-focused activities as the Party joins the global community in celebrating the strength, creativity and potential of young people,” he said.

At the national level, the celebration will hold in Abuja, where party leaders, youth stakeholders, political actors, opinion leaders and other participants are expected to take part.

The National Youth Leader also invited other Nigerians to participate in the discussions on expanding youth participation as a means of reducing voter apathy and strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
