IMT Mass Comm alumni commission N6m solar power project

ENUGU — The N93/H96 class of the Association of Mass Communication Students, ASMACS, Institute of Management and Technology, IMT, Enugu, has donated a 15KW lithium-battery solar power system worth over N6 million to the institution’s Department of Mass Communication.

The project, comprising a 12KVA inverter and 15 solar panels, was commissioned at the weekend by the Secretary to the Enugu State Government, SSG, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, during the class’s 28th anniversary reunion.

Commissioning the project, Onyia commended the alumni for giving back to their alma mater, describing the gesture as “a reflection of the values of excellence, accountability and service.”

He said: “When people who passed through an institution return to give back, it strengthens the institution and creates opportunities for those coming behind them.”

The SSG said reliable electricity was critical to modern education, particularly as technology had become central to teaching, learning and research.

“Today, you cannot talk about modern education without talking about power. Technology has become central to teaching, learning and research. This project will therefore make a significant difference,” he said.

Onyia said the state government was taking steps to reposition IMT, including the appointment of a rector capable of restoring the institution’s academic standards and institutional values.

He urged other alumni associations to emulate the N93/H96 class by supporting the development of their alma mater.

National President of the class, Lady Lilian Anukwuem, said the project was conceived as an enduring legacy that would support teaching, learning and research in the department.

“We wanted to do something that would not only mark our 28th anniversary but would remain useful to the department for many years,” she said.

Anukwuem said the class had also undertaken financial and charity interventions for members and their families during her one-year tenure, while strengthening its financial structure through the implementation of national dues.

She appealed to the department to protect and maintain the solar power system.

“This is our contribution to the future of the department, and we want students and staff to continue benefiting from it for many years,” she said.

The event was attended by the Rector of IMT, Prof. Gozie Ogbodo, executives and members of the N93/H96 class, as well as other stakeholders.
