Igbo Elders reaffirm commitment to true federalism, unity, and justice

NNEWI — The United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC), Worldwide, has reaffirmed its commitment to a true federal system anchored on unity, justice, and equity, emphasizing its role in fostering sustainable peace, national cohesion, and balanced development in Nigeria.

In a statement signed by its Director General, His Lordship Bishop Justice Alpha Ikpeama, titled “UNIEC Worldwide adopts foundational charter preamble, reaffirms commitment to unity, justice, and true federalism,” the council highlighted its determination to strengthen the unity of Ndigbo both within Nigeria and across the global diaspora.

The elders underscored that a just, equitable, and truly federal democratic system is indispensable for national progress, asserting the need for principled elder statesmanship and accountable leadership to guide governance.

“The elders, statesmen, women of distinction, and stakeholders of the Igbo nation, both within Nigeria and abroad, reaffirm their collective commitment to preserving our rich heritage, advancing shared aspirations, and strengthening the unity of Ndigbo and Nigeria in a rapidly evolving global environment,” the statement read.

The council emphasized values central to Igbo civilization, including dignity, resilience, enterprise, communal solidarity, and respect for justice and human worth. It called for a credible, non-partisan platform where the wisdom and experience of elders could be harnessed to serve the collective good of the nation.

UNIEC further stated that its mission focuses on fostering unity without erasing diversity, promoting cultural renaissance, economic revitalization, peaceful coexistence, and constructive engagement with government, civil society, and international partners.

“As part of its core mandate, the Council will continue to preserve and promote Igbo heritage and identity, advocate consistently for true federalism, justice, and inclusive governance, and mobilize the intellectual, moral, and developmental capacities of Igbo stakeholders worldwide,” the statement added.

The council concluded by pledging to uphold truth and justice, prioritize collective interest over individual ambition, and collaborate with all stakeholders committed to fairness, peace, and human advancement in Nigeria.
