Igbo Book of Records: Elders challenge Ndigbo to excellence

NNEWI—THE United Igbo Elders Council, UNIEC, Worldwide, yesterday, said that its ‘Great Igbo Achievers Book of Records’ is a permanent archive dedicated to recording the remarkable contributions of Igbo individuals across generations.

The book according to UNIEC is also designed as motivator to Ndigbo for excellence, as it is a comprehensive historical and institutional publication that will document excellence across a wide spectrum of human endeavour, including governance, public leadership, entrepreneurship and commerce, science and technology, medicine and healthcare, academia and education, arts and culture, law and justice, philanthropy, and diaspora leadership.

A statement by UNIEC Director General, His Lordship, Alpha Justice Ikpeama, said that the landmark cultural and historical initiative coming from Igbo elders is set to redefine how the achievements of the Igbo people are documented and celebrated worldwide.

Giving the title of the book as “The Great Igbo Achievers Book of Records – Global Heritage Edition,” UNIEC said the project is being developed as a permanent archive dedicated to recording the remarkable contributions of Igbo individuals across generations.

According to UNIEC, the “Book of Records is designed as a comprehensive historical and institutional publication that will document excellence across a wide spectrum of human endeavour. These include governance and public leadership, entrepreneurship and commerce, science and technology, medicine and healthcare, academia and education, arts and culture, law and justice, philanthropy, and diaspora leadership.”

In a blueprint released by the Central Organising Committee, The Great Igbo Achievers Book of Records, disclosed that the publication will open with a series of ceremonial pages reflecting the rich heritage and enduring spirit of the Igbo civilization.

It noted that the introductory sections will include a sacred heritage invocation, institutional seals, and a dedication celebrating the resilience, creativity, and enterprise of the Igbo people. The founding proclamation of the project formally establishes the Book of Records as a permanent global archive to preserve the legacy of Igbo excellence for future generations.

“At the heart of the publication is a flagship feature titled “The 50 Greatest Igbo Achievers in History,” a special section highlighting individuals whose contributions have had a transformative impact across centuries. From pioneering entrepreneurs and renowned scholars to visionary leaders and cultural icons, this segment will spotlight those whose accomplishments have shaped the trajectory of Igbo history and influenced the broader global community.
“Additional prestige sections will include the Roll of Global Igbo Legends and the Hall of Igbo Immortals, both designed to recognise historic figures whose legacies continue to inspire progress and leadership. These sections aim to immortalise personalities whose work transcended their era and helped define the values of innovation, resilience, and excellence associated with the Igbo people.
“Beyond these historic recognitions, the publication will also feature detailed profiles of distinguished Igbo personalities worldwide. Each profile will present biographical information, career milestones, major achievements, honours and awards, and a reflective legacy statement”.
UNIEC also disclosed that the book is not merely intended as a celebratory publication, but also as a scholarly reference for historians, researchers, educators, and students seeking to understand the contributions of the Igbo people to global development.
“To strengthen institutional sustainability and broaden participation, the initiative also incorporates several strategic recognition platforms. These include “The 25 Most Influential Igbo Personalities of the Century,” the Igbo Legends Endowment Circle, and “The 100 Great Igbo Patrons of History.
“These platforms are designed to mobilise philanthropic and corporate support, while also recognising individuals and organisations that contribute to the preservation of Igbo heritage and historical documentation.
“We have outlined an ambitious fundraising framework targeting approximately ?1 billion to support the production, research, publication, and long-term sustainability of the Book of Records.
“The book is funded through corporate sponsorships, institutional advertisements, endowment contributions, goodwill messages, and patron fellowships.
“Plans are also underway for a major unveiling event known as The Great Igbo Achievers Legacy Summit, a historic gathering expected to attract governors, federal ministers, traditional rulers, corporate leaders, scholars, and members of the global Igbo in the Diaspora.
“The summit will feature the official unveiling of the Book of Records, the presentation of Legacy Awards to distinguished personalities, and the induction of founding patrons whose support will help sustain the project.
“UNIEC believe the Book of Records will emerge as a permanent cultural institution dedicated to documenting Igbo excellence and preserving historical memory.
“By systematically recording achievements across generations, the project aims to strengthen pride, unity, and identity among Igbo communities worldwide, while inspiring younger generations to pursue excellence in every field of human endeavour.
UNIEC assures that The Great Igbo Achievers Book of Records will become one of the most comprehensive and authoritative efforts ever undertaken to document and preserve the historical achievements of the Igbo people.
