Gridlock as vehicles burn in multiple crashes on Admiralty Way in Lagos

Motorists and residents were stranded in the early hours of Monday following multiple road crashes along Admiralty Way in Lagos after one of the vehicles involved burst into flames.

An eyewitness said the incident occurred inward the Admiralty Roundabout axis of Admiralty Way in Lekki, a busy commercial corridor, causing panic in the area.

According to the witness, the situation escalated after one of the vehicles caught fire, sending thick smoke into the sky and forcing motorists to flee the immediate vicinity.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the development in a public update on Monday, stating that the collision occurred near Road 14 along Admiralty Way, close to Admiralty Roundabout.

Footage from the scene showed one of the vehicles completely engulfed in flames, producing heavy black smoke visible from a distance.

As a result, road users quickly abandoned the affected lane while emergency responders moved in to contain the situation.

Traffic movement in the area was severely disrupted, prompting LASTMA officials to divert motorists through Road 14, allowing them reconnect to Durosimi Etti Road to avoid the accident scene and the burning vehicle.

The disruption was further compounded by ongoing road rehabilitation along the axis by the Lagos State Government, leaving many motorists and commuters stranded in long traffic queues.

Emergency firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service later arrived at the scene and battled the flames.

As of press time, the fire had been extinguished, but the affected vehicle was completely burnt.

Fortunately, no casualty was recorded in the incident.

Meanwhile, LASTMA officials remained at the scene to regulate traffic and ensure smoother movement along alternative routes. Officers also introduced a temporary contra-flow arrangement to ease congestion.

Personnel of the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies were deployed to maintain order and ensure the safety of lives and property in the area.

Efforts were ongoing at press time to remove the wreckage and restore normal traffic flow along the busy corridor.
