Firefighters contain NIPRD blaze in Abuja, save property worth N990m

The Federal Fire Service, in collaboration with the FCT Fire Service, has extinguished a fire at the National Institute for Pharmaceutical Research and Development (NIPRD) in Idu, Abuja, saving property valued at about N990 million.

The fire was caused by an electrical surge and was reported at about 6:34 am on Monday, January 26, 2026.
A staff member, Sgt Mohammed, immediately alerted the Federal Fire Service Control Room.

In a statement signed by DCF P. O. Abraham, National PRO and Head of Corporate Services at the Federal Fire Service Headquarters, the service said a team from its headquarters was the first to respond to the incident.

The team, led by DSF Bolaji, tackled the fire, which broke out on the top floor of the building.
According to the statement, “Due to the magnitude of the incident and the potential risk of escalation, a water tender and crew from the Federal Fire Service Dei-Dei Station were also deployed to reinforce firefighting operations, while the FCT Fire Service arrived at the scene to support the response.”

The statement explained that firefighters worked for nearly two hours to bring the situation under control, noting that early reporting helped to limit the damage.

“Although firefighting operations lasted close to two hours, the timely emergency call played a critical role in mitigating damage,” it noted.

As a result of the coordinated response, most of the facility and its equipment were saved with “approximately 99 percent of the affected property, valued at N990 million successfully salvaged.”

The Federal Fire Service reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property and assured Nigerians of its readiness to respond swiftly to fire and rescue emergencies across the country.
