FG seals deal for UK degrees in Nigeria

The Federal Government has taken a major step toward expanding access to global education by securing a partnership with Coventry University to establish a campus in Nigeria.

The initiative, driven through a Transnational Education ,TNE, partnership, will allow Nigerian students to obtain internationally recognised UK degrees without leaving the country.

Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, who was in the United Kingdom with President Bola Tinubu, held strategic meetings with university leaders, investors and development partners to advance the project.

Under the plan, the proposed Coventry University campus will be located in Alaro City, Lagos State, and will offer Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine ,STEMM, Business, as well as Technical and Vocational Education and Training ,TVET.

According to the Federal Ministry of Education, the degrees awarded will be equivalent to those issued in the United Kingdom, ensuring that Nigerian students receive globally recognised qualifications while studying at home.

Admissions into the new campus are expected to begin between the third and fourth quarters of 2026, subject to regulatory approvals.

Officials say the partnership will significantly reduce the cost of obtaining foreign degrees while strengthening Nigeria’s skills base and improving the employability of graduates.

Speaking on the development, Alausa said the initiative would allow families to enjoy the benefits of international education without sending their children abroad.

“We want Nigerian parents to enjoy their children being at home while still receiving a world-class UK education,” the minister said.

The Federal Ministry of Education, working with the United Kingdom’s Department for Business and Trade, said the collaboration formed part of efforts to position Nigeria as a regional hub for knowledge, innovation and skills development.
