FG orders probe into alleged plot against local barge operators

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, has directed the Nigerian Shippers’ Council to investigate allegations of systemic attempts to undermine indigenous barge operators at the nation’s seaports.

Oyetola gave the directive during the 2026 First Quarter Citizens/Stakeholders’ Engagement, Sectoral Performance Review, and Ministerial Management Retreat of the Federal Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy, held in Lagos.

In a press release signed by the Special Adviser to the Minister, Dr. Bolaji Akinola, representatives of local barge operators at the forum raised concerns over what they described as a coordinated effort by certain foreign interests to edge them out of the maritime logistics value chain.

The operators alleged that a combination of unfavourable policies, operational bottlenecks, and preferential treatment allegedly extended to some foreign-linked firms by terminal operators is creating an uneven playing field.

According to them, if the trend is not urgently addressed, it could erode indigenous participation, shrink their market share, and threaten the survival of local businesses within the sector.

Responding, the Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to safeguarding local investments and promoting fair competition across the maritime industry.

He tasked the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, in its capacity as port economic regulator, to carry out a comprehensive and unbiased investigation into the allegations.

Oyetola warned that the government would not tolerate any form of anti-competitive practices or policy inconsistencies capable of disadvantaging Nigerian operators.

He further stressed the importance of continuous stakeholder engagement in identifying industry challenges and shaping policies that will drive growth and sustainability in the sector.

The Minister reiterated that the Federal Government remains committed to developing the marine and blue economy as a key driver of economic growth, job creation, and national development.
