Ex- Ondo Speaker, Akindele, hails Aiyedatiwa over rehabilitation of Owena Dam

— 1.3 m residents in 7 LGs to benefit

Former Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Jumoke Akindele, has hailed the state governor, Dr Lucky Aiyedatiwa for the reactivation of the Owena Multipurpose Dam as well as the Akure Water Supply and Sanitation Project.

No fewer than 1.3m residents in seven LGs will benefit from the reactivation of the dam.

The council areas include Akure South, Akure North, Idanre, Ifedore, Ile-Oluji/Okeigbo, Ondo East and Ondo West.

The Owena Multipurpose Dam Project—funded by donor agencies, the Federal Government, and the Ondo State Government—was originally conceived during the administration of the late Dr. Olusegun Agagu between 2003 and 2009.

However, subsequent administrations did not prioritize its completion.

However, governor Aiyedatiwa during the groundbreaking of the AFD- and AfDB-assisted water supply projects at the Owena Dam in Igbara-Oke, said that an end has come to the era of prolonged water scarcity in the state.

He assured them of clean, safe and sustainable water after decades of dry tap.

Aiyedatiwa observed that the stalled Owena Multipurpose Dam Water Treatment Plant had represented lost opportunities for years, but with the intervention of the Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and the African Development Bank (AfDB), Ondo State is embarking on a historic turnaround.

He explained that the Urban Water Supply Project would rehabilitate the Owena Water Treatment Plant, deliver new transmission mains to Akure and environs, construct 7,500m³ reservoirs and expand urban distribution networks.

The former Speaker, in a statement, said governor Aiyedatiwa deserves genuine commendation for resuscitating the long-abandoned water scheme.

Akindele said “I must commend the governor for his numerous developmental initiatives, particularly his urban renewal projects. Akure is now wearing a new look.

” I have traveled to the Southern Senatorial District; I live in the Akure Central District; and I have equally been to the Northern Senatorial District. Everywhere is taking a new shape.

She said “I am most impressed that Mr. Governor has been thoughtful in reviving the Owena Multipurpose Dam Project. It is truly commendable.
