Electrical glitch hits Lagos airport, FAAN diverts flights

Barely a month after an inferno gutted the Old Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, flight operations have been disrupted at the recently constructed temporary terminal after an electrical spark in an operational office.

The incident, which occurred at about 2:05 pm on Wednesday, led to the emission of smoke, thereby resulting in the temporary shutdown of the terminal.

The temporary terminal was built to cater to flight operations while the Old Terminal, which had been earmarked for rehabilitation before the fire outbreak, was being renovated.

Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Mrs Olubunmi Kuku, in a recent television interview, said Middle East Airlines, Air France, KLM and Ethiopian airlines had relocated to the terminal.

However, following the electrical spark incident, all flights currently operating from the terminal have been diverted to Terminal 2.

A statement by FAAN said: “Electrical maintenance is currently ongoing to ensure that all electrical systems are functioning optimally ahead of the terminal’s reopening.

“All flights that currently operate from Terminal 3 have been diverted to Terminal 2, passengers are hereby advised accordingly.

“The situation is under control, as personnel of the Aerodrome Rescue and Firefighting Services, ARFFS, promptly responded and contained the incident.”
