El-Rufai back in ICPC custody after mother’s burial

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been returned to the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) following his temporary release to attend his mother’s burial.

El-Rufai, who had been granted compassionate leave on March 27, 2026, after the death of his mother in Cairo, was re-arraigned on Tuesday upon his return. His mother was buried in Abuja on Sunday in a ceremony attended by several prominent political figures.

On Tuesday, the former governor first appeared before the Kaduna State High Court over a separate charge filed by the ICPC. However, proceedings were stalled due to the absence of a co-defendant, forcing the court to adjourn the matter until April 10, 2026.

Following the adjournment, El-Rufai was taken to the Federal High Court Kaduna, where his application for bail was scheduled for hearing. The court had earlier fixed March 31, 2026, to consider the bail request.

After the court appearances, he was returned to ICPC custody as legal proceedings in the cases against him continue.
