RIVERS STATE – Preliminary investigations into the gas bubbling incident in Bille Community indicate that the seepage may be linked to subsurface geological activity, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC) has said.

In a statement issued by Commission Chief Executive Oritsemeyiwa Eyesan, NUPRC noted that early field observations suggest the gas emissions could have been triggered by underground processes, though detailed geological and geotechnical studies are ongoing to determine the exact cause.

The Commission disclosed that a coordinated technical investigation was immediately activated after being notified of the incident, in accordance with industry protocols. The investigation aims to establish the source and extent of the gas seepage and recommend both immediate and long-term mitigation measures.

NUPRC stated that the study is being conducted in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to ensure a comprehensive and evidence-based outcome that will support sustainable solutions.

Acknowledging concerns over public safety, environmental impact, and health, the Commission reassured residents that their welfare remains a top priority.

“The overall well-being of our communities and the protection of the environment remain paramount,” the statement said, adding that all necessary actions would be taken following regulatory requirements and global best practices.

Residents of Bille Community were urged to remain calm, follow safety directives, and cooperate with authorities as efforts continue to fully understand and address the situation.
