Female genital mutilation, FMG (circumcision) is evil and traumatic, but it is “the best thing that happened to me”. These were the sentiments of Victoria Inyama, Nigerian actress.
She said this during an Instagram live session with media personality Daddy Freeze, noting that it has helped her abstain from unwanted intimacy.
She said: “FGM is evil. You now have to deal with the consequences of that thing, having a mind of its own.
“Yes, I was (circumcised). Because I grew up in the village with my grandmother. That is what is helping me. That is the best thing that they did for me.
“I swear to God. If I say I no dey do, I no dey do. And that is the power that I have. That is why nobody can say they have seen me in this hotel or that hotel.”
Narrating the experience, Victoria Iyama said it happened “At the age of five or six. They will give you some kain kain (local gin). I just remembered they held me down. I think I fanted.
“
“It was a specialist person who did it. It was just a swipe.”
On circumcising her children, she said: “I did not do it for the children. They are British. I will agree if their father wanted to.
“Even though I have the trauma, I think that is the best thing that happened to me.”
Reaction
A viewer (Orluchy_B) responded to the video: “It’s honestly shocking and I can’t believe that in 2026 anyone is trying to justify FGM in any form – done by a ‘specialist’ or not.
“There is absolutely no benefit to it — none. I’ve done extensive research and worked directly with survivors, and the reality is clear: it causes harm, trauma, and lifelong consequences.
“If as an adult, you won’t go and mutilate your genitalia, why do it to a child? There is no ‘FGM is evil, but…’ — no justification, no grey area. It is simply harmful, FULLSTOP.”
Victoria Inyama responded to the comment, putting her stand in perspective
She wrote: “I will only respond to you, not in defence of anything but to state my stand.
“1, l was a child. About 5/6yrs old. 2, l love my late grandma to bits. She thought it was best at that time. 3, l SAID ME! Not anyone else. 4, I never said it’s a good thing. But l said it’s good for me. l don’t miss what l Never Experienced. So it’s all good FOR ME!
“5, Good thing l am very well educated. l have not validated it for ANYONE ELSE.
“So what’s the criminality? I love my late Grandma to bits. She raised me well… too well my dear. l grew up in a VERY loving home with my Grandma. My traumas started when l got married.
“To you it’s evil…to me l still love my Nan. l am not imposing my experience to/ on anyone. I could have as well Lied.”
