…“I hold no bitterness, no malice, no regrets” — Bode George

By Dapo Akinrefon

Notable Nigerians, including President Bola Tinubu, former President Goodluck Jonathan, Governors Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State and Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, and the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Ogunwusi, have lauded Chief Olabode George as an outstanding statesman who has consistently demonstrated devotion to Nigeria and his state of birth.

The tributes were delivered during George’s 80th birthday celebration and the launch of his memoir, Unfiltered: A Chronicle of Selected Speeches, held at the Naval Dockyard in Victoria Island, Lagos.

The event attracted a distinguished gathering, including Senator George Akume representing President Tinubu, Col. Paul Edoi (retd) representing former President Jonathan, former governors, national party leaders, traditional rulers, and prominent business figures.

Tinubu: An Outstanding Politician

Represented by SGF George Akume, President Tinubu praised George for his dedication to public service. “At 80, Chief George has lived a full life. He dedicated his life to serving our country with a distinguished career in the military and as a political leader. Today is a celebration of a distinguished Nigerian, a statesman, and an outstanding politician,” Tinubu said.

He also acknowledged George’s contributions as an adviser, noting that despite being on opposite political sides since 1999, his admiration and respect for George remain undiminished.

Jonathan: A Courageous Man

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, through Col. Edoi, described George as a man of courage and conviction. “Your 80th birthday is a testimony to a life of courage and steadfastness,” he said.

Bala Mohammed: A Detribalised Nigerian

Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed described George as a detribalised Nigerian. “He has done so much to ensure that his party, the PDP, succeeds. He is a colossal figure whose impact is felt widely,” the governor said.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde described him as a formidable leader, while the Ooni of Ife commended him for his support of the Oduduwa throne.

Bode George: No Bitterness, No Malice, No Regrets

In his address, George reflected on his journey through public life. He recounted his years as a naval officer, politician, and public servant, noting the challenges and triumphs he has experienced.

“My journey through public life has been long and, at times, painful. I have served in government and in opposition, celebrated victories, endured defeats, and been both praised and misunderstood. But through it all, I have held firmly to one conviction: Nigeria is worth serving and worth believing in,” George said.

He urged current and future leaders to serve with integrity and prioritize the nation above personal interests. “Leadership is not about noise; it is about service. What endures is the legacy of character, kindness, and service to others. I hold no bitterness, no malice, no regrets,” he added.

George concluded by expressing hope that his memoir would inspire reflection, dialogue, and understanding about the meaning of service and living with conviction.
