Benue seeks N242bn for roads, partners with NCDC for development
By Peter Duru, Makurdi
Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has disclosed that his administration requires about N242 billion to construct roads across all 23 Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state.
The governor made the announcement while hosting the Board and Management of the North Central Development Commission (NCDC) in Makurdi. The delegation was led by Chairman Mr. Cosmas Akighir and Managing Director Dr. Cyril Tsenyil.
Governor Alia urged the commission to partner with the state on critical sectors such as infrastructure, agriculture, and employment creation, especially in rural communities. He emphasized that while security has improved in many areas, continued collaboration is necessary to sustain peace and facilitate the return of displaced persons from IDP camps to their ancestral homes.
“We have done a lot to ensure peace across the state and drastically reduced insecurity in several LGAs. However, ongoing efforts with stakeholders remain vital,” he said.
Chairman Akighir described the visit as part of NCDC’s effort to engage stakeholders and build partnerships to accelerate regional development. He assured the governor of the commission’s commitment to supporting Benue and the wider North Central region.
Dr. Tsenyil briefed Governor Alia on the commission’s activities since inception, including plans for a comprehensive regional development blueprint. He added that a North Central Stakeholders Summit is scheduled for April to gather input from state governments on priorities and collaboration opportunities.
Traditional rulers, represented by Chief Edward Ujege, appealed for support in restoring peace in affected communities, enabling the safe return of IDPs, and establishing skills acquisition centres to empower youths through vocational training.
Governor Alia reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to infrastructural development and sought NCDC’s partnership to achieve sustainable growth and stability in Benue State.
