Bandits impose N10m levy on Katsina communities amid fragile peace

Bandits loyal to a notorious armed leader, Isiya Kwashen Garwa, have reportedly imposed fresh levies of N10 million each on Garin Lamido and Yan Shuni communities in Bakori Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The renewed demand comes despite several peace agreements previously reached between local authorities, community leaders, and representatives of armed groups in the area.

The development was disclosed by security analyst and crisis journalist, Bakastine, in a post on his X handle, where he raised concerns over the continued vulnerability of rural communities in the state.

According to him, the latest levy has triggered panic among residents, forcing many families to abandon their homes for fear of possible attacks.

Sources from the affected communities said the demand has further heightened tension in an area already grappling with recurring insecurity and limited security presence.

Residents expressed frustration over what they described as a repeated cycle of agreements and violations, questioning the effectiveness of the peace deals previously brokered.

Despite ongoing security operations in parts of Katsina State, the bandits are said to maintain dominance in several rural areas, worsening fears among farmers who depend on access to their farmlands.

DAILY POST gathered that the situation has become a recurring pattern in several communities across the North-West, where armed groups impose levies and later launch attacks if their demands are not met.

“Such arrangements, often referred to locally as ‘peace deals,’ have failed to provide lasting security, instead creating a cycle of intimidation and forced compliance.”

Security observers also warn that the continued payment of levies could further embolden armed groups, potentially expanding their influence across more rural settlements.

Bakastine raised concerns over the sustainability of existing security strategies and questioned whether sufficient enforcement mechanisms are in place to protect vulnerable communities.
