Bala Mohammed signals move to ADC Thursday amid PDP crisis

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, says he is leaning towards the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as he considers leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with a final decision expected on Thursday.

If he follows through, it would be a major moment for the opposition. Mohammed is not just a sitting governor; he chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, and his possible exit underlines how deep the party’s internal crisis has become after repeated failed reconciliation efforts.

He spoke on Tuesday after hosting a delegation of the ADC led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Engr. Babachir Lawal, at the Government House in Bauchi.

“We have found ourselves in a very serious situation. I have done everything possible to ensure reconciliation, but it has not worked. We set up committees at both the national and state levels to explore all options, including even the All Progressives Congress, but sadly, we discovered that we are not wanted there,” he said.

Mohammed said talks with different political platforms are still ongoing, but the ADC has emerged as the most likely destination.

“As of now, ADC appears to be a very welcoming and acceptable platform. However, we have not concluded discussions. We are engaging stakeholders to ensure we do not make mistakes,” Mohammed added.

He signalled that the process is entering its final stage, with a clear timeline already set.

“We are very conscious of the timeline. Everything will be concluded by Thursday so that we can move forward together. You will hear a firm commitment from us,” he said.

The governor also pointed to external influences as part of the PDP’s troubles, accusing the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, of deepening divisions within the party.

He said he had met with key figures, including leaders of the All Progressives Congress and President Bola Tinubu, in a bid to resolve the impasse, but those efforts did not succeed.

Earlier, Lawal said the ADC delegation visited Bauchi on the directive of the party’s national leadership under former Senate President David Mark, as part of moves to bring Mohammed into the party ahead of the 2027 elections.

“The task of rescuing Nigeria in 2027 requires the unity of all well-meaning Nigerians. We are here to engage Governor Bala Mohammed because of his leadership qualities and political experience,” Lawal said.

He expressed optimism that the talks would yield results, adding that the ADC is ready to welcome the governor and his supporters as it builds a broader opposition front.

Lawal added that the party’s growing presence across states could strengthen its chances in the next general elections.
