Bago calls for tougher action on informants amid rising security concerns

Niger State Governor, Muhammad Umaru Bago, has raised concerns about the alleged role of informants in enabling attacks on communities, describing the trend as a major setback in the fight against insecurity.

Speaking during a sympathy visit to the Emir of Borgu, Alhaji Muhammad Haliru Dantoro Kitoro IV, in New Bussa, the governor linked several recent incidents—including the abduction of schoolchildren from St. Mary Catholic School, Papiri, in Agwara Local Government Area—to the activities of individuals who provide information to criminal groups.

According to Governor Bago, informants contribute significantly to insecurity across the country. He urged that “stiffer measures” be considered to curb the situation and protect communities from further attacks.

The governor assured the emir and the affected community that security agencies, in collaboration with the state government, are intensifying efforts to safely rescue the abducted children as soon as possible.

He appealed to residents to work closely with security agencies by sharing credible information while warning against religious intolerance or actions that could trigger communal suspicion.

“The security agencies are committed, but they cannot succeed without the support of the people. We all need to work together to confront these challenges,” he said.

Earlier, the Emir of Borgu expressed concern over the frequency of attacks in the area, noting that criminal groups have been operating within parts of the Borgu forest. He called on both state and federal authorities to take urgent steps to restore security and open up the forest for productive use.

The emir commended Governor Bago for the visit, describing it as a demonstration of leadership, empathy, and commitment to the welfare of the people.
