Atiku, Seyi Makinde in separate private visits to IBB

Former Vice President and chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Tuesday held separate private meetings with former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, at his hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State.

Speaking to journalists after his meeting, Atiku criticised the amended Electoral Bill passed by the Senate, urging opposition parties and Nigerians to challenge it, saying it would create confusion rather than strengthen the electoral system.

He called on opposition parties to unite against the amendment.

“The decision of the Senate will create more problems during elections. Nigerians expected real-time electronic transmission of results, but what we got is a mixture of electronic and manual transmission, which will cause confusion and chaos,” Atiku said.

“There is a need for all opposition parties to rise against this amendment. We should not allow it to stand as passed.”

The former Vice President also faulted the proposed tax bills, describing them as controversial, and accused the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of forgery.

“They forged everything — age limit, tax laws. That is the hallmark of the APC,” he said.

On zoning of the presidency, Atiku said the ADC had not adopted any zoning formula.

“The ADC constitution does not provide for zoning. Only the PDP has zoning in its constitution. What ADC is doing now is mobilising and registering like-minded Nigerians,” he explained.

Atiku arrived in Minna aboard a private jet at about 2pm and proceeded to Babangida’s residence with Ben Obi and ADC Assistant National Youth Leader, Hajia Hassana Shuaibu Dada.

Governor Makinde also met Babangida separately but declined to speak with journalists after the meeting.

The Senate had earlier passed the amended Electoral Bill at an emergency session, allowing both electronic and manual transmission of election results from polling units.
