Anambra PDP crisis: Chieftain petitions Wike over ‘congress hijack’

A dispute has broken out over the ongoing congress of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Anambra State. Party chieftain Chief Amaechi Onowu has petitioned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, alleging that the process has been hijacked.
At the centre of the complaint are concerns about how the exercise meant to produce new leaders for the party in the state is being conducted, especially the sale of congress forms and who is able to participate in the process.
Onowu, a chairmanship aspirant in the ongoing congresses, raised the concerns while speaking with journalists at a press conference in Abuja.
According to him, the position of state chairman had been zoned to the Anambra Central Senatorial District, where he comes from.
“I am a registered member of PDP in the ward of Idemili North of Anambra State. I want to draw the attention of our national leader of the party, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Barrister Nyesom Wike, to some of the actions orchestrated by some political merchants who have kept PDP in same shambles since the era of Chinwoke Mbadinuju till today.
“In Anambra State, certain elements have hijacked all congress forms as he wants to contest for the state chairman of the state as unopposed candidate despite being the chairman of the caretaker committee.
“They also have hijacked the entire process in the ongoing congress in the state.
“The chairman of the State Caretaker Committee in Anambra State has disenfranchise some committed stakeholders and party faithful from obtaining the congress forms to enable them to contest in the ongoing congress in the state.
“This is against the directive of our leader, Chief Nyesom Wike, of allowing every registered member to participate at the congress to elect the state executive members.
“The sales of chairmanship and other forms have been hijacked in all the 21 local government areas of the state,” Onowu stated.
He added that he would approach the court by Tuesday next week if the sale of congress forms was not opened to interested party members and transparency ensured in the congress process.
