ABU unveils blueprint on Agric, human capacity development for Zamfara

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has developed a comprehensive blueprint to tackle agricultural challenges and strengthen human capacity development in Zamfara State.

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adamu Ahmed, presented the proposal to Governor Dauda Lawal during the commissioning of the newly upgraded departmental library at the Department of Political Science and International Studies.

Governor Lawal, an alumnus of the department (Class of 1988), funded the refurbishment of the library as part of his contribution to the university.

Prof. Ahmed said the blueprint was produced at no cost to the Zamfara State Government and resulted from a harmonised effort by ABU’s premier research institutions—the Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR), National Animal Production Research Institute (NAPRI), National Agricultural Extension and Research Liaison Services (NAERLS), the Institute of Education and the Institute of Administration.

He explained that the integrated framework combines crop research, climate-resilient agriculture, livestock innovation, last-mile extension delivery and broad human capacity development into a single transformation agenda for the state.

According to him, the interventions focus on restoring crop and livestock productivity, strengthening community resilience to climate shocks and insecurity, and training extension agents in modern systems—largely delivered through virtual platforms of the ABU Distance Learning Centre.

Prof. Ahmed added that the proposal also seeks to transform the Zamfara civil service through targeted training for senior, middle-level and directorate cadres. He commended Governor Lawal for prioritising merit-based reforms, including the examination-based appointment of permanent secretaries, and praised the administration’s investment in capacity-building for procurement officers, auditors and administrative personnel.

Responding, Governor Dauda Lawal expressed appreciation to the university for its commitment to supporting Zamfara’s development efforts. He said ABU played a defining role in shaping his life and pledged to continue contributing to his alma mater.
