99% of students yet to apply for NELFUND – AAU

The authorities of Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma have expressed concerns over the low number of students from the institution that have so far applied for the Nigeria Education Loan Fund, NELFUND, as on August 13, 2025.
DAILY POST reports that Prof O. M. Iniaghe, the state’s Director of Information and Communication Technology disclosed this in a statement dated August 14, 2025 shared on the AAU All Inclusive News Facebook page.
The statement is titled, “Statistics of Student Applications for NELFUND and encouragement to apply”.
Iniaghe said a total of 240 students of the school have so far registered for the scheme.
He said the figure is estimated to be over 99 percent of the eligible students that are yet to apply.
The Director of ICT said the Acting Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof Sunday Olowo Samuel has directed the directorate to provide all necessary support to ensure that all students of the university benefit from this scheme.
He disclosed that the faculty of Basic Medical Science has the highest number of students of 59 representing 24 percent that have applied for the programme.
He added that it was followed by the faculty of Engineering and Technology with 39 students representing 16 percent.
Others are faculty of Law with 26 students representing 11 percent, faculty of Art with 21 students and 9 percent, faculty of Clinical Science and faculty of education having 17 students representing 7 percent respectively.
Next are the faculties of Life Science, Management Science, Physical Science and Social Science with 14 students each and also representing 6 percent.
The last in the list are faculties of Agriculture and Environmental Science with three students apiece and 1 percent respectively.
Prof Iniaghe added that all the students are encouraged to take advantage of the opportunity by applying for the NELFUND loan.
He said the loan is designed to provide financial support for the completion of their academic programmes.
He also added that an updated report of the application by the students would be available on Tuesday 19, August, 2025.
DAILY POST reports that the recent statistics by NELFUND said a total of N86 3 billion have been disbursed to 449,03 students since its portal was launched on May 24, 2024.
The statistics released on Monday, August 11, 2025, said the ampunt was disbursed to the beneficiaries as of August 6, 2025.
It said the disbursement includes N47,629,338,384 paid directly to 218 institutions as tuition fees and N38,718,120,000 given to students as upkeep allowances.
The report further revealed that 731,140 students have registered on the loan portal, out of which 720,732 have successfully applied for loans representing a 98% application success rate.
