LAGOS — Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Mr. Peter Obi, on Monday led a delegation to visit leaders of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, in Lagos, ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obi was accompanied by former LP governorship candidate in Lagos State, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour; National Coordinator of the Obidient Movement, Dr. Yunusa Tanko; and other associates.

The Afenifere leaders who received them included the group’s Leader, Oba Oladipo Olaitan; Chief Supo Shonibare; former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Senator Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele; Secretary-General, Chief Sola Ebiseni; National Publicity Secretary, Prince Justice Faloye; Organising Secretary, Mr. Dele Farotimi; Bashorun Segun Sanni; Deputy Secretary-General, Mr. Alade Rotimi-John; and others.

In a statement after the meeting, Afenifere spokesperson, Prince Justice Faloye, said Obi’s visit was to “express gratitude for the support given during his 2023 presidential campaign and for Afenifere’s consistent advocacy for good governance.”

According to the statement, Obi also briefed Afenifere leaders on current political developments and his consultations regarding the 2027 presidential election.

Discussions at the meeting touched on issues including the state of the nation, the economy, democratic space, and governance costs. Faloye added: “There were wide discussions ranging from Peter Obi’s candidacy in the 2027 elections to the harassment of political opposition and threats to democracy, as well as the dire economic situation and spiralling cost of governance.”

Obi was quoted as reaffirming his commitment to restructuring and to Afenifere’s long-standing values on education, health, rural integration, and full employment.

In its response, Afenifere restated its adherence to egalitarian principles and expressed appreciation for Obi’s alignment with its values. The group’s leadership also raised concerns about restrictions on democratic space, urging Nigerians to keep alive the democratic ideals championed by the nation’s founding fathers.
