Jimi Lawal, a close ally of former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Ogun State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Lawal secured victory at the party’s governorship primary election conducted across the 236 wards of the state.

The exercise was contested by three aspirants, namely Lawal, Abiodun Ogundipe and a United States-based medical practitioner, Dr. Marie Odusina.

Announcing the result on Monday at the party secretariat, the Secretary of the Ogun State Primary Election Committee constituted by the national leadership of the ADC, Barrister Adebimpe Adelowo, declared Lawal the winner after polling the highest number of votes.

According to Adelowo, Lawal garnered 19,418 votes to defeat Ogundipe, who scored 5,775 votes, while Dr. Odusina polled 4,825 votes.

He said: “Hon. Jimi Lawal scored a total of 19,418 votes, Abiodun Collins Ogundipe polled 5,775 votes, while Dr. Marie Abolaji Odusina secured 4,825 votes.

“Therefore, Hon. Jimi Lawal, having scored the highest number of votes, is hereby declared the winner of the Ogun State gubernatorial primary election and consequently becomes the governorship candidate of the ADC for the 2027 general elections.”

Adelowo described the primary election as peaceful and transparent, stressing that the ADC remained a formidable force ahead of the next elections.

“We remain the party to beat. We are one indivisible party. Preparation to win the next election has begun, and we will mobilise massively from the grassroots,” he stated.

The committee secretary also dismissed insinuations that he had been removed as the National Organising Secretary of the party.

“For the avoidance of doubt, Article 14 (13) (iv) of the ADC Constitution empowers the National Organising Secretary to implement and coordinate all field activities of the party,” he said.

Adelowo further disclosed that officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, monitored the exercise across the 236 wards of the state.

According to him, the electoral umpire expressed satisfaction with the turnout of party members and the orderly conduct of the exercise.

“The results have been submitted to the Chairman of the party in his capacity as Chairman of the State Congress of the party where the governorship candidate is to be elected, in line with the provisions of Article 12 (10) and Article 13 (9) (iii) (a) of the Constitution of our great party,” Adelowo added.
