Onigbongbo LCDA, Brampton forge ties on innovation, youth devt

Executive Chairman of Onigbongbo Local Council Development Area, LCDA, Moyosore Adebanjo, has deepened efforts to leverage international partnerships for grassroots development and improved service delivery by collaborating with Mayor of Brampton, His Worship Patrick Brown.

This move comes after a strategic official visit to the City of Brampton, Ontario, Canada, culminating in the establishment of institutional ties between both municipalities and opening new pathways for cooperation in innovation, environmental sustainability, youth development, economic growth and governance exchange.

The visit, undertaken at the invitation of Brown, had an Onigbongbo delegation including the leader of the Legislative Council, Francis Nkwo Banwuzia and Council Manager, Mr. Abiodun Osineye.

One of the major outcomes of the visit was Brampton City’s commitment to collaborating with Onigbongbo LCDA in exploring innovative recycling initiatives and knowledge-sharing opportunities aimed at addressing waste management challenges within the council area.

The delegation also engaged with officials of BHive Brampton, the city’s business innovation and startup incubation hub, where discussions centered on creating opportunities for young innovators and entrepreneurs from Onigbongbo LCDA to access mentorship, incubation programmes and technology exchange initiatives.

BHive Programme Manager, Yogananth Gopalakrishnan, alongside Uche Okugo, Coordinator of Innovation and Technology, Economic Development, expressed their willingness to work with Onigbongbo LCDA in expanding access to innovation ecosystems for young creatives and emerging entrepreneurs.

In another significant engagement, the delegation met with Shafqat Ali, a senior Canadian government official, who expressed support for developmental initiatives at the municipal level and conveyed interest in strengthening ties with Nigeria through future engagements.

Discussions explored opportunities for Onigbongbo LCDA to participate in Canadian-backed initiatives focused on youth empowerment through Artificial Intelligence (AI) training and digital exchange programmes, medical intervention partnerships, and innovative recycling solutions aimed at promoting environmental sustainability.

The engagement reflects the increasing relevance of international cooperation in addressing local challenges and expanding opportunities for communities at the grassroots level.

In a related engagement, Erica Henry-Jackman, Manager of Investment Attraction and International Relations (A), Economic Development, City of Brampton, led discussions on economic cooperation, investment opportunities and business expansion support, with particular focus on the development potential of Onigbongbo’s Cane Village and other local economic assets.

The visit also opened the door for legislative cooperation, as Brampton’s legislative arm indicated its readiness to host members of the Onigbongbo Legislative Council as part of an exchange programme designed to promote the sharing of best practices in lawmaking, local governance and public administration.

Speaking on the outcome of the visit, Moyosore Adebanjo described the engagements as a strategic investment in the future of Onigbongbo LCDA.

“This visit was driven by a clear objective to build meaningful partnerships that deliver real value to our people. The relationships established and opportunities identified will contribute significantly to our vision of a more innovative, sustainable and prosperous Onigbongbo.”

The Chairman expressed appreciation to Mayor Patrick Brown, the City Council of Brampton and all officials who facilitated the engagements, noting that the visit has laid a solid foundation for a mutually beneficial relationship between both municipalities.
