Niger: 15 feared dead in vehicle fire along Mokwa road
No fewer than 15 persons are feared dead after a vehicle caught fire along the Enagi–Costain Duma Sharp Corner Road in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, August 8, 2026, with the victims reportedly trapped inside the vehicle when it was engulfed by fire.
An eyewitness, Ahmed Ndagana, who confirmed the incident, said about 15 persons were believed to have been burnt to death in the vehicle.
Ndagana said the bodies had since been given a mass burial in accordance with Islamic rites.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known, while details about the vehicle and identities of the victims were still being established.
He urged motorists using the route to exercise caution, particularly around the sharp bend and during the rainy season.
Efforts to reach the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger state for confirmation were unsuccessful, as calls and a message sent to the Sector Commander, CC Aishat Saadu, seeking clarification on the incident had not been responded to as of the time of filing this report.
The reported death toll had yet to be officially confirmed by the relevant authorities.
