IBADAN — Oyo State Governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, has declared Thursday, August 20, 2026, a work-free day to enable residents to participate in activities marking this year’s Isese Day celebration.

The declaration was contained in a memorandum signed on Wednesday by the Secretary to the Oyo State Government, Prof. Musibau Babatunde.

The governor congratulated adherents of African Traditional Religion in Oyo State, Nigeria and beyond, wishing them “a successful and spiritually enriching celebration.”

Makinde also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to fairness, inclusiveness and equal treatment of adherents of all religions in the state.

The governor acknowledged the support of traditional worshippers for his administration over the past seven years and expressed appreciation for their contributions.

According to the memorandum, the work-free day is intended to enable workers and residents to participate fully in the celebration and activities promoting the state’s cultural and traditional heritage.

It will also provide an opportunity for residents to pray for “the peace, unity, and stability of the state in particular, and the country in general.”

The state government recalled that the Makinde administration introduced the Isese Day celebration as part of efforts to recognise adherents of traditional religion and promote Oyo State’s rich cultural identity.

The administration has also incorporated the celebration into its broader cultural tourism agenda, highlighting the potential of the state’s cultural heritage to drive economic growth.

The government noted that “cultural tourism remains one of Oyo State’s greatest strengths,” stressing that the sector could contribute significantly to the state’s economic development.

The work-free day will therefore allow residents to observe the annual celebration while showcasing and promoting the cultural heritage for which Oyo State is renowned.
