Kano Govt pledges to complete All abandoned projects

KANO — The Kano State Government has pledged to complete all abandoned projects across the state while continuing the execution of new development projects aimed at improving infrastructure and public services.

The Commissioner for Public Procurement, Projects Monitoring and Evaluation, Comrade Nura Ma’aji Sumaila, made the commitment on Sunday during a press briefing on projects being executed under the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.

According to him, the state government has undertaken more than 1,508 development projects valued at over ₦928 billion across the 44 local government areas of the state.

He said 799 of the projects have been completed, while 709 are at various stages of completion.

Sumaila also disclosed that 619 constituency projects are being implemented through members of the Kano State House of Assembly.

Responding to questions from journalists, the commissioner said the present administration was committed to completing projects inherited from previous governments.

He noted that several abandoned projects had been taken over by the government and were being completed, adding that no abandoned project would be left unfinished across the state’s local government areas.

Sumaila also revealed that the government had revoked some contracts over poor performance by contractors.

He identified projects in the Bebeji, Bunkure, Rano, Kibiya and Tsanyawa areas among those affected, explaining that the contracts were reassigned to new contractors who subsequently completed the projects.

He said the ministry’s responsibility includes monitoring project implementation, assessing performance and recommending contract revocation where contractors fail to meet required standards after being given opportunities to address identified shortcomings.

The commissioner explained that the government has introduced strict measures to ensure accountability in the use of public funds and that contractors are paid only for verified work.

According to him, payment requests are first certified by the supervising ministry before officials of the Ministry of Public Procurement, Projects Monitoring and Evaluation conduct site inspections to confirm the level of work completed.

He added that engineers, architects, builders, quantity surveyors and other professionals are engaged to inspect projects and ensure they comply with approved standards before payments are approved.

Sumaila said the projects being executed by the Yusuf administration span urban renewal, road construction, rural infrastructure, education, healthcare, security and other critical sectors.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to transparency, effective project monitoring and the delivery of quality infrastructure that meets the needs of the people of Kano State.
