IPOB criticises Soludo over position on Kanu’s release

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has criticised Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo, over his opposition to former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, regarding calls for the release of IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement issued on Monday, IPOB spokesperson, Emma Powerful, accused the governor of taking a position that contradicted his earlier public stance on Kanu’s detention.

According to the group, Soludo had previously advocated Kanu’s release, citing his reported visit to the detained IPOB leader at a Department of State Services (DSS) facility in Abuja in January 2023, during which he reportedly offered to stand as surety for him.

IPOB also referred to remarks attributed to Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, in March 2025, indicating that the governor had continued efforts aimed at securing Kanu’s release as part of broader initiatives to promote peace in the South-East.

The group expressed disappointment that the same administration allegedly criticised Peter Obi for making a similar appeal, describing the development as inconsistent.

IPOB questioned what it described as a change in the governor’s position and suggested that political considerations may have influenced his current stance on the matter.

The organisation further argued that calls for Kanu’s release cut across political and regional divides, noting that several prominent Nigerians have previously advocated dialogue and a political resolution of the issue.

Among those mentioned were the late Mbazulike Amaechi and former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, George Obiozor.

IPOB maintained that Kanu’s continued detention remains a matter of concern for its supporters and urged the Federal Government to consider his release.

The group also reaffirmed its support for individuals and organisations advocating Kanu’s freedom and said it would continue to pursue the cause through peaceful advocacy.
