I can’t be a second or third wife for any man — Eyiyemi Afolayan

Eyiyemi Afolayan, daughter of renowned filmmaker Kunle Afolayan, has revealed that she would never agree to become a second or third wife, citing the challenges that often come with polygamous marriages.

Speaking in a recent interview with BBC News Yoruba, the actress explained that her stance on polygamy is not driven by jealousy but by her observations of the conflicts and complications that frequently arise in polygamous homes.

“I can’t be a second or third wife for any man. It is not because I am jealous or anything. Polygamous home comes with a lot of problem,” she said.

The Aníkúlápó actress also shared her views on relationships and financial responsibility in marriage, stressing that she would not enter a union with a man who is entirely dependent on her financially.

According to Eyiyemi, she believes a man who intends to marry her should already be doing something meaningful for himself and should not rely on her for sustenance.

She explained that her background and upbringing have influenced her expectations in a partner, adding that she is willing to support her husband but not take on the responsibility of feeding him.

“I was born into wealth, any man that wants to marry me must be doing something for himself. I can’t be feeding him but I can support him,” she said.

Eyiyemi further stated that she does not believe in building a man from scratch, arguing that financial success can sometimes change people’s attitudes and behavior in relationships.

The rising Nollywood star, who played Princess Omowunmi in the acclaimed film Aníkúlápó, has largely kept her private life away from public attention. However, her candid remarks on marriage, financial independence, and polygamy have sparked conversations about modern relationships and the expectations young women have of potential partners.
