Ghana’s Black Queens qualify for World Cup playoffs

Ghana’s Black Queens staged a second-half comeback to defeat fellow West Africans Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 and book their place in the Intercontinental World Cup Playoffs scheduled for December.
Ghana dominated possession for large periods of the encounter but found themselves behind before half-time after Côte d’Ivoire converted a penalty to take a 1-0 lead into the break.
The Black Queens responded strongly after the restart, eventually drawing level with a headed effort to put the game back on level terms.
With the match heading towards its conclusion, Germany-based Josephine Bonsu stepped up from the penalty spot and calmly converted a late spot-kick to complete Ghana’s comeback and secure a 2-1 victory.
The result means Ghana will now advance to Phase 1 of the Intercontinental Playoffs in December, where they will be joined by either Nigeria or South Africa.
The playoffs will determine qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, with Ghana now one step closer to securing a place at the global tournament.
