Construction worker falls to death from 13-storey A’Ibom building project

UYO—Tragedy struck in Akwa Ibom State on Friday when a contract worker with Ratcom Construction Company died following a fall from the top floor of a 13-storey building under construction.

The incident, which occurred at Ibom Tropicana Hotel construction site has thrown workers and residents of the area into mourning.

It was gathered that the deceased, a fire sprinkler fitter whose identity is yet to be confirmed, reportedly left the ground floor after measuring his work, climbed to the top floor, and suddenly fell to his death.

A source told Vanguard that the worker died instantly and his body was later evacuated to an undisclosed morgue in Uyo.

One of the workers at the site, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said he was fetching water when he heard a thud on the ground, adding that when he turned to look, he saw someone with his head smashed on the floor.

Another worker who also spoke to our correspondent said he did not know what took the deceased to the top floor.

He added that he was working outside the building when he suddenly noticed commotion at the site.

According to him, when he got to the scene, he found the deceased “with arms, legs and waist broken and the head smashed beyond recognition”.

‘He works as a fire sprinkler fitter at the site. He measured work for his boys that morning and later went upstairs. When I came, I found him dead on the ground with multiple fractures”.

However, when contacted the state Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, on Saturday, he said was yet to be briefed on the incident and promised to conduct investigation to ascertain what happened.
