‘AMVCA 500 loaves bread dress caused me injuries, tears’ – BBNaija’s Queen

Queen Mercy Atang, ex-Big Brother Naija, BBNaija, housemate, has said that the 500 loaves of bread dress she wore to the 12th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards, AMVCA, was so heavy she cried, and had injuries.

Queen made the revelation in an interview with the BBC, where she noted that Tianah Empire designed the dress.

She told BBC: “I did not expect my dress to go viral like this. I did not. I just felt like people would say, ‘Why did she wear bread?’

“Some people would like it, some wouldn’t like it, right? But then I saw that BBC carried it.

“At first I cried. But I said no, I had to pull myself together.”

On the process to making the dress, she said: “Tiana Empire made the dress — the king of fashion. My own part was just, ‘Mama, is my dress is ready?. She said, ‘It’s not ready, but don’t worry, it will soon be ready’.

“It took her like weeks to get the dress ready. But for me, the weight of that dress almost broke my waist. I won’t lie to you. If you check my back, I have serious wounds because that bread is very, very heavy.

“You know, I literally cried while wearing that dress. I said, first I need to catch my breath. I need to… hey! Me, who wants to wear a bread dress? I didn’t know the kind of weight that cloth carried.

“The first few seconds when I wore the dress, I cried before I said, ‘Yeah, bring it. I’m ready to wear the cloth’.

“Funnily enough, this year I really didn’t want to go for AMVCA—that’s the honest truth. I just felt like I had a lot of things I had put down that I wanted to achieve for my business. So I wanted to achieve all of them one after the other. AMVCA this year was not even in my dictionary.”

‘I couldn’t sit’

“Funnily enough, I went to the AMVCA late. As I arrived, the red carpet had closed. I said, ‘Okay, I will still go because if I post this picture online, people will say it’s AI.’ I wanted them to see that it was real.

“So I got to the red carpet. People made way for me. I won’t lie to you. I didn’t enter the hall. I didn’t even try to sit down because ah, that cloth is heavy.

“Even when they removed some bread, even when some bread fell off from my back, I knew I couldn’t sit down. I just carried myself because I was weak. I was tired.

“I did not expect my dress to go viral like this. I did not. I just felt like people would talk and say, ‘Why did she wear bread?’ Some people would like it, some people wouldn’t like it, right? But then I saw that BBC carried it — all the international global TV stations carried it. Me, myself, I was shocked.”
